Economic Reference News January 12, 2020

The reporter learned on January 8 from a regular press conference on the situation of pig production in the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs that with the implementation of a series of high-gold policies to support pig production, coupled with market conditions, the nation ’s pig production capacity has maintained a good momentum. In December 2019, the nationwide breeding sow stocks increased for the third consecutive month, and the number of live pigs produced increased by 14.1% from the previous month. Before the Spring Festival, the market supply of fat pigs increased sharply. In addition, commercial reserves, government reserves and imported pork will be released one after another. It is expected that pork supply and demand will be generally stable during the Spring Festival.

"Since August 2019, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs has issued a series of policies and measures to support live pig production in conjunction with relevant departments. The policy has a high gold content for many years," said Yang Zhenhai, director of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Bureau of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. Significant progress has been made. It is specifically manifested in supporting large-scale pig farms to strengthen infrastructure construction, increase financial subsidies for pig production, increase credit insurance support, further standardize the management of closed areas, unblock piglets and cold fresh pork “green channels”, and improve pig farming land Policies to streamline environmental assessment procedures.

Driven by various policy measures and market conditions, farmers ’confidence in increasing feed and supplementing pens has continued to increase, and the national pig production capacity has maintained a good momentum of recovery.

Yu Kangzhen, deputy minister of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, pointed out that the first is the continued recovery of basic production capacity. In December 2019, the national breeding sow stocks increased by 2.2% month-on-month, and increased by 3% month-on-month, an increase of 7.0% from September. In December 2019, pig feed production increased by 2% month-on-month and increased for 4 consecutive months. The second is the faster recovery of large-scale pig farm capacity. In December, the number of live pigs and breeding sows in pig farms with an annual production scale of more than 5000 heads increased by 2.7% and 3.4% respectively, both of which increased for 4 consecutive months. Third, the number of slaughter pigs increased significantly. From August to November 2019, the slaughtering of pigs continued to decrease month-on-month, and it fell back in December, rising by 14.1% month-on-month. Fourth, the production capacity of pigs in the Northeast, Northwest, and Huang-Huai-Hai regions where production was restored earlier was further released. "The recovery situation of pig production in December 2019 continues to improve, laying a solid foundation for accelerating the recovery of pig production in 2020."

Talking about pork protection during the Spring Festival, Yu Kangzhen said that from the perspective of production and supply, pig production continued to maintain a good momentum of recovery and development. Some pig farms started to sell the fattened pigs in the market. Before the Spring Festival, the market supply of fat pigs increased significantly. Hog slaughter in December 2019 increased by 14.1% over November. Judging from the consumption monitoring data, the pork retail transaction volume in the bazaar market increased by 11.7% month-on-month in December. The growth rate of supply is higher than the growth rate of consumer demand, and the contradiction between supply and demand of pork has eased. In addition, the weight of fattening pigs in December has increased significantly, coupled with increased commercial reserves, government reserves and increased pork imports. The supply and demand of pork during the Spring Festival is expected to be generally stable.

In addition, in order to ensure pork supply and quality and safety during the Spring Festival, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs also organized a nationwide inspection of pig slaughtering, which is required to be fully completed by January 10. Full coverage of all pig slaughtering enterprises in the country without leaving dead ends. "We have deployed agricultural and rural departments at all levels to work with public security and market supervision departments to keep an eye on key time points and regions, and increase inspections and collaboration on all aspects of pig products including breeding, transportation, slaughtering, processing, and management. Combat, strictly investigate and deal with illegal crimes, and ensure the safety of the meat on the tongue of the people. "Yu Kangzhen said.
