Recently, Iowa State University experts in food science, nutrition and neurology have found that increasing abdominal fat and muscle loss can affect the mental flexibility of the elderly.
Researchers selected more than 4,000 elderly people from the British Biobank, measured their muscle, abdominal fat, and subcutaneous fat weights, and analyzed them for 6 years and fluid intelligence (a physiologically-based indicator of cognitive ability, such as (Perception, memory, computational speed, reasoning ability, etc., decrease with age). The results show that more abdominal fat can make the elderly's fluid intelligence worse; in contrast, muscles can be more protective.
The study published in the journal "Brain, Behavior and Immunity" reminds elderly friends not to sit for long, eat too greasy, avoid abdominal obesity and maintain exercise and muscle growth, which can effectively prevent cognitive decline and maintain the brain flexible.
